Web Science

Welcome to the Web Science research group at the School of Computing at the University of Leeds.

Web Science is an emerging area to study the science of
  • integrating highly decentralised resources into a virtual information space;
  • developing models and techniques for retrieving, reasoning and routing of information/resources from providers to users in a heterogeneous and decentralised environment; and
  • adapting the virtual information space to the context of its use (e.g. increasingly socially embedded).

At Leeds, Web Science includes the Grid and with a focus on semantic description of services and virtualisation of resources. Semantic discovery of services is a key element for building new web and grid services. Our current work has involved the experimentation and evaluation of innovative applications for supporting sustainable scientific e-communities, the use of mobile application for e-health and the use of social computing for e-learning. These applications are underpinned by a novel e-infrastructure using technologies such as Semantic Web, Grid and Peer-to-Peer. There is a focus on system architecture and, in particular, Quality of Service. Research areas include person-to-person community modelling, adaptive resource discovery, Grid resource brokering and integration of risk management in Grid architectures.

Our projects are often addressed by multidisciplinary teams of researchers. These collaborations bring together application domain specialists from academia and industry with Information and Computer Scientists from the School. See the link to our current work for the projects and partners involved.
