Data from SIS
A number of students are likely to be undertaking projects which either require or are aided by data extracted from SIS, the School Information System, or by partial copies of SIS.Requests for such data inevitably involve the SIS team in a significant amount of work, principally because access to the DB is restricted for security reasons. We are only prepared to entertain such requests if :
- They are made by email by the supervisor
- The data required are fully documented as a requirement on the Mid-Project Report
- A clear statement of the data requirements is made, including:
- the type of data (e.g. module names, module enrolment records per student per year)
- the amount of data (e.g. for all Information Systems students for the years 1995-2001)
- the format of the data (e.g. CSV file)
- the purpose to which the data is to be put
- It is understood that all data provided will be anonymous; no student names will be provided; if individual id numbers are required, these will not be the real student id numbers, and no means will exist of translating the dummy ids into the real ids. No details will be provided of either programmes or modules where there are a small number of students enrolled, since anonymity cannot be ensured in such cases.
- They are notified in good time. Best efforts will be made to provide data in a timely manner. However, it is not possible to guarantee that the data requested can be provided by any given deadline, so the sooner it is asked for the better!
- Copies of SIS will only be provided as postgreSQL databases on the School database server (csdb)
While we will do our best, we do not guarantee to meet all requests. Please take this message seriously, we intend to.
