FACULTY OF ENGINEERING

Aim and Minimum Requirements Form

This is the first form to be submitted by students after the start of the project, and is to be submitted electronically. The link is at the end of this page. Students should discuss the requirements of the form with their supervisor prior to submission but it is the student's responsibility to submit it by the due date (not the supervisor's). Before submitting this form it is important that student and supervisor agree that the aim, project outline and minimum requirements are feasible.

The information submitted will be monitored and you may be asked to clarify details or resubmit information. Monitoring should be seen as providing useful feedback but is limited to the relatively small amount of information you provide. It follows therefore that absence of comment does not indicate that a project is problem-free.

Project Aim

The aim of the project is the overall top-level goal. It might be helpful to consider the project title. The submission should be sufficient to explain the scope of the problem.

Project Outline

You are asked to give a very brief summary of the work you will do to gain marks for four of the marking scheme criteria. The answers should be directly linked to your project. It will be helpful for you to look at the detailed marking scheme guidelines to ensure you understand the criteria in relation to the problem you are solving.

Examples:

  • Discuss literature on current parallel methods of solving branch and bound.
  • Obtain requirements analysis in a structured interview with the problem owner.
  • Implement a new algorithm for solving the assignment problem.
  • Compare run times of existing and new solution approaches.

Minimum Requirements

List up to five minimum requirements.

The minimum requirements are
  • Deliverables - you will hand them in!
  • Quantified - examiners should know what to expect and how much
  • Appropriate - they should solve a sufficiently difficult problem
  • Acceptable - if you deliver them (and no more), it will be worth 8/20 for "delivery of a solution"
  • Agreed - your supervisor, assessor, other members of the School, and external examiners should agree that your minimum requirements meet the above criteria
Minimum Requirements should be written in a way which allows the greatest opportunity to expand upon them and/or deliver them to a higher standard to gain extra credit. (At the mid-project stage you will be required to describe any enhancements that you intend delivering if time permitted or, failing that, you would recommend as future work in this area.)

Note that the marks available for delivery of a solution relate specifically to your achievements in relation to the agreed minimum requirements.

Foundation Modules

In order for a project to be considered appropriate it must relate to School of Computing advanced modules. Undergraduate final year project students must include at least one Level 3 module. There 'may' be exceptions but these MUST be brought to the attention of the Projects Coordinator for approval.

Note that the form will only allow you to select from relevant COMP modules a student is enrolled for.

Note, this form is not activated until supervisors have been allocated

Please fill in your school username which should take you to your own projects objectives form within the school database. Note, you need to be on a School machine to access this page. You may resubmit the form if you make changes. The submission of the form will involve a copy of the details being mailed to the project coordinator, your supervisor(s) and yourself. Please keep a copy of your mail as a receipt.
