Mobile DANTE - Mobile Software Platform Porting
Dr Alison Marshall a researcher at the University of Leeds has been involved in a long-running research project looking at the use of IT for managing chronic health conditions. As part of this project, Alison developed an application for use on Symbian smartphones which allows users to record details of their diet.
Alison made contact with a large company that was interested in trialling the system, but unfortunately they required the software on the rival Microsoft Windows Mobile platform.
Leeds Source-IT took the existing Symbian-based software apart and re-built it on the Windows Mobile platform and ensured that all of the functionality and ease of use of the original system was preserved. As well as transferring the software to a different operating system, the Source-IT team also wrote supporting documentation for the new version.
Alison Marshall said:
The development and porting of code for the DANTE Mobile project was continually changing and being adapted. We therefore required developers that would be open to specification and user interface changes. The Source-IT team using an Agile methodology for project management with continual feedback from the consultants allowed the mobile application to develop as specifications were updated. This was achieved by being able to monitor the project in a transparent manner with their online project management tool which we found to be beneficial to the development process.
