Leeds MSc students take on world researchers in MorphoChallenge.

The European PASCAL research network runs "Challenges", contests to encourage top researchers worldwide to explore and apply new techniques and algorithms for pattern analysis, statistical and computational modelling and learning.

This year three of the top ten entries resulted from courseworks for the Computational Modelling module on our new MSc programmes in Cognitive Systems and Informatics. Students worked in pairs to develop an Unsupervised Machine Learning program for morphological analysis of English, Finnish, and Turkish text.

Two winning systems were developed by Minh Thang DANG & Saad CHOUDRI, and Khalid ur REHMAN & Iftikhar HUSSAIN. The third top-10 Leeds entry, cheat.py, was a hybrid combination of all the Leeds student entries.

The best 10 entries will be published in the Proceedings of the PASCAL Challenge Workshop (Venice, April 10-12 2006).
