I am a Reader in Interactive Systems, and a member of the Visualization and Virtual Reality research group in the School of Computing. I am also the School's Director of Research. For my own research, I specialise in:
- Navigation (encompassing virtual reality, information spaces and the real-world)
- Real-time interaction (particularly giga-pixel displays and applications to cancer diagnosis).
If you are interested in doing a PhD in either of these topics then I would be delighted to hear from you. To find out what this might be like, see My PhD: The reality of interacting with Powerwalls, an article by Chris Rooney (one of my students) on page 22-23 of issue 81 of the BCS-HCI Interfaces magazine.
In 2008 I was awarded a Fellowship for Experienced Researchers from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, which I spent studying navigation in real and virtual spaces with Prof. Heinrich Bülthoff at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics. I am also an Associate Editor of the journal Presence: Teleoperators and Virtual Environments and was Technical (Papers) co-chair of the 18th Annual BCS HCI Conference (HCI'04).
My research group was the regional hub for the UK Visualization Support Network vizNET, and one of the partners in the VisMaster Coordinated Action on Visual Analytics, which was funded by EC Framework 7.
Prior to coming to Leeds I spent seven years as a researcher in the School of Psychology at Cardiff University, where I also completed my PhD. Before that I worked in industry for PAFEC Ltd, Prime Computer, Datel Technology, and Evans and Sutherland, mostly in research and development software engineering positions.
