Research into Industry Seminar: 9 Mar 2010
Making Research Count: From BSc to Phd to Industry, Neil Sumpter, Irisys
- How do the research skills picked up in the lab transfer into industry?
- How do promising research ideas and novel technology lead to successful products?
By describing a career based solely in a 'start-up' technology company as it grows from a handful of staff into a multi-million pound UK manufacturing company, it is hoped to illustrate how having clever technology is not enough, finding the right problem to solve is the key, and how rewarding research-led roles can be found outside the lab whether you are a fresh graduate or a more specialised PhD student. By demonstrating Irisys' novel infra-red tracking products, the talk will describe how Irisys uses techniques learnt in Leeds to build smart detection technology that tens of thousands of people interact with daily without even knowing it.
