I conclude with a discussion of specific problem domains which we plan to investigate. At this early stage it is not clear what will be the most fruitful areas of investigation, so these plans are necessarily rather vague and subject to future modification.
We aim to produce prototype software in the areas of Geographical Information Systems and Virtual World Simulation. The latter will probably take the form of some kind of game scenario but will demonstrate capabilities that would also be applicable to intelligent Robotic Control. Each of these demonstrators will make use of a (small) number of separate DPs each dealing with an aspect of physical systems. The subtask of the project concerned with examining a particular semantic domain, identifying key concepts and ultimately formulating DPs will be called a domain case study. The domains to be studied will be chosen partly to demonstrate most fully the potential of DPs in computer systems and also to take account of the expertise of and potential benefits to the affiliates.
We currently envisage domain case studies in the following areas:
