Workshop on Geographic Ontologies Grounding and Vagueness

17th - 18th April 2008

Craiglands Hotel, Ilkley, West Yorkshire

(Note: the venue has been changed)

To mark the end of the EPSRC project "Foundational Ontology for Geographic Information" (FOGI), we are holding a workshop on 17th - 18th April. The focus of the workshop will be geographic ontologies with special focus on representing vagueness and on linking ontologies to actual geographic data (grounding).

An excursion to the Dales on Friday afternoon is also planned for those who are interested.

Topics include:

  • specification of semantics for vaguely defined geographic features;
  • difficulties faced in the development of geographic ontologies, particularly relating to the modelling of vagueness;
  • linking high-level geographic concepts to actual (low-level) geographic data;
  • developing data models and visualisation techniques for presenting vague geographic information to users;
  • formal modelling of abstract geographic/spatial concepts such as "place" and "environment".

Venue

The workshop will be held at the Craiglands Hotel, in the small Yorkshire town of Ilkley, locteded at the foot of the famously bleak Ilkley Moor. Ilkley is situated 16 miles (26km) north-west of central Leeds and 9 miles (15km) from Leeds/Bradford Airport.
