Overview of the Module

Welcome to the Envisioning Information module! The module is taken by students on all MSc programmes in the School of Computing

MSc in Multidisciplinary Informatics
MSc in Cognitive Systems

The objectives of the module are:

to be aware of the value of visualization to gain insight into both numeric data (from science, engineering and medicine for example) and also non-numeric information (such as networks and documents)
to understand the fundamental techniques for data visualization
to be skilled in the use of a state-of-the-art visualization system

Visualization can be seen as covering a wide scope including:

Scientific Visualization, where the focus is on numerical data and the relationships between the variables is generally well understood (for example, the temperature depends on the position in a room)
Information Visualization, where the data may be numerical or non-numerical, and often the relationship between the variables is less well understood

Lectures This link will give you lecture information.

Practicals There will be regular practical sessions. The visualization tools we shall use include gnuplot, R, Excel, xmdvtool and IRIS Explorer.
