Research Internships: Textile Watermark Embedding
Code of project: 2009-late2
Project Supervisor: Prof. Roger Boyle
Area of interest: This project is linked to the Computer Vision Research Group.
Appropriate for degree programmes: All single and joint honours students from the School of Computing
Pre-requisites:Further information about the prerequisites for this project is available from Roger Boyle, but some programming experience is expected.
Project Outline
This project relates to proofing fabric against counterfeiting: we are discussing with textile scientists the insertion of something akin to a watermark in a label.
Watermark extraction in paper has been pursued in other School research - this is documented. Part of the project would involve adapting or optimising existing software to the new domain.
We would then apply the algorithm to materials generated by Textiles to determine the usability and limits of the idea in fabric.
We are also interested in how much information can (reliably) be inserted into such a mark - there would be some informatiom theory in this aspect of the project.
The internship will be for a period of 10 weeks (including 1 week paid holidays) at a rate of £270.27/week.
