Headstart Courses provide an opportunity for young people to stay at the engineering department of a university to find out what it is like to study for a degree in science and engineering. In order to qualify for admissions, students should be:

  • in Year 12 or Scottish Year 5
  • looking forward to university entrance
  • thinking about science and engineering or careers in technology-based industries.

The Headstart Focus course at the University of Leeds aims to introduce students to the wide-ranging applications of modern computing, and to highlight some of the career opportunities for graduates in engineering.

The course includes an active introduction to several areas of computing, including:-

  • artificial intelligence
  • informatics in the health science domain
  • knowledge management
  • modelling and simulation
  • software engineering
  • virtual reality - visualisation and human-computer interaction

Features of the programme include a hands-on group modelling project with a prize for the best project; a visit to a local organisation to see technology in action; opportunities to spend time with students and recent graduates; a varied social programme; and opportunities to experience life as a student at the University of Leeds.

The programme will be led by a team of departmental staff and students who can provide information about degree programmes, university life and career opportunities.
