Focus of the Workshop
There is currently much interest in the development of Ontologies
to support a wide variety of tasks including knowledge reuse, data integration,
knowledge acquisition, knowledge management, web-based services and many
other information applications. The workshop will focus on the construction
of ontologies to support geo-computation, the processing and storage
of geographic knowledge.
The purpose of the workshop is:
- to examine the state of the art in geo-ontology
- to identify specific ontological challenges in data handling
- to expose key problems and issues in the construction of geo-ontologies
(e.g. vague concepts, spatio-temporal processes,...)
- to discuss appropriate methodologies
- to evaluate alternative formalisms and tools
- to consider criteria for evaluating and comparing ontologies
- to explore mechanisms for integration and inter-operation among
different ontologies.
- to set a research agenda for geo-ontology.
- to promote exchange of ideas and to foster collaborations
Workshop Format
Participants will be required to present a short position paper (around 10
minutes) outlining their own particular approach to geographical ontology
and drawing attention to what they see as key problems and fruitful approaches
to research in this area. We also invite additional more detailed presentations
of geo-ontology related work. Participants may if they wish submit papers
relating to the topics of the workshop to be be made public via this
web site.
As well as paper presentations there will be informal discussion sessions
on a variety of topics as suggested by participants. There will also be the
opportunity for dividing into groups to focus on particular common interests.
