After School Computing Club: Toolkit

This page includes the toolkit of resources required to set up the After School Computing Club. You will need to download a copy of the appropriate Java software and its associated Toolkit. You will also need to set up the student workfiles (see .zip file).

Files to Download

If you have any technical difficulties and/or require additional information, please contact aschool@comp.leeds.ac.uk

Local install instructions

You can either choose to install the work files on a shared network area, or on each machine.

Shared network area

  1. Ask your system's support for a new account for the after school club. It needs to have enough space to install the software, and store the student's work; 60 Mbs of space should be enough. It should also allow multiple people to login to the account at the same time.
  2. Install j2sdk-1_4_2_09-windows-i586-p.exe on every machine you would like to use for the after school club. You will need admin access to install the software.
  3. Install j2me_wireless_toolkit-2_2-windows.exe on the new after school account. Don't install it in the default directory; placing it in My Documents will be best.
  4. Unzip the contents of the group.zip file to <directory where the toolkit is stored>\apps
  5. Create a shortcut on the desktop to the ktoolbar program. It is located in <directory where the toolkit is stored>\bin\ktoolbar.exe
  6. Before the session login to all the machines using the after school account.
  7. Assign each student a number (they will use this same ID every week in order to link their work together - please emphasise the importance of them remembering this). This number will refer to which programming environment to use.

NB An important point to remember is that the students will have access to each others work - but dont tell them unless its going to be constructive!

Install on each machine

  1. Install j2sdk-1_4_2_09-windows-i586-p.exe and j2me_wireless_toolkit-2_2-windows.exe on every machine you would like to use for the after school club. You will need admin access to install the software.
  2. On each machine unzip the contents of the single.zip file to C:\WTK22\apps
  3. Each student will then be given a certain machine to work on for the duration of the club.
