After School Computing Club: Resources
The idea for the club came from discussions between staff from the School of Computing at the University of Leeds and two local ICT teachers. The teachers wanted to their pupils to understand more about computer programming by using the development of a game for mobile phones as the basis for this activity. There are two resources:
- The first game that was developed is a variation on Tetris. The initial program was written by Andrew Bennett, a postgraduate student in the School of Computing at the University of Leeds.
- A second game has now been developed: it is based on Pacman. This time the initial program is being written by Trevor Dodds, another postgraduate student in the School of Computing at the University of Leeds.
Evaluation Comments
Here are some comments about the After Schools Computing Clubs from pupils, teachers and student mentors:
"The early sessions built confidence because the pupils could quickly extend and develop the code, and the fruits of their labours could quickly be seen." Teacher
"The club is great - you were taught how to make a game and got to play it at the end. Playing the game and being able to download it to my phone were the best things." Pupil
"The best thing was getting things wrong because you had to fix them - you learn and it's fun." Pupil
"I liked the Leeds University people coming in and showing us how to makeit because they know what they are doing." Pupil
